2020 Toyota Corolla: Redesigned & It Feels So Good

People asked for a new Corolla. Toyota delivered a new Corolla. And, boy, does the new 2020 model shine bright. It’s been fully redesigned, revamped, reshaped, and we’d bet it’s one of the best cars Toyota’s crafted in recent years. (At least, it’s one of our favorite new arrivals.)

We talk the talk on behalf of the 12th-generation model, but we guarantee it can walk its own walk, unassisted. Here’s everything you need to know about the ’20 Toyota Corolla, which is available for sale and lease right now at a Toyota dealer near you.

Boldly Going Where No Corolla Has Gone

So, what’s new in the latest Corolla? First and foremost, the 2020 Corolla adopts a Hybrid model – a first in its line – which makes it one of the most affordable hybrid cars in America.

The new Corolla Hybrid looks an awful like its fuel-powered brother, though there are a few key differences, such as the following:

  • Hybrid models have a special EV Mode drive selector, which allows drivers to switch between all-electric and hybrid driving.
  • The Corolla Hybrid boasts a touchscreen that incorporates an “energy flow” display, which breaks down the flow of energy between the battery, motor, and engine.
  • Its 600-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack is ingeniously packed beneath the back seats to increase interior volume.
  • EPA ratings are estimated at 53 city/53 highway MPG.

2020 Toyota Corolla St Louis

New Dynamic Platform, Same Fun-Loving Demeanor

Built on Toyota’s patented TNGA platform, the 2020 Corolla benefits from an independent rear suspension – a modest upgrade over the previous generation’s torsion system. It’s in real-world traffic – through downtown St. Louis, for instance – where the new Corolla finds its groove.

Overall, ride quality in the 2020 Corolla is enchanting, especially at the class’s price point. Responsiveness is pitch-perfect; there’s no lag between input and result, which is most apparent during those annoying stop-and-go periods. Steering and acceleration are satisfying, allowing drivers to merge aggressively on I-64 during rush hour. Its transmission is equally impressive, as there’s virtually no “rubber band” feeling between gear shifts – something from which other CVTs suffer.

Power comes from one of two plants: a carried-over 1.8L or the all-new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, a 169-horsepower DOHC 16-valve engine that makes 151 lb.-ft. of torque. This latter option can be paired with the standard CVT and optional paddle shifters, as well as a 6-speed manual if the CVT isn’t your jam. Fuel economy comes in at 31 city/38 highway MPG.

Standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0

Perhaps the biggest perk of buying a 2020 Corolla is its onboard driver-assist offering, which earned it a spot on the IIHS Top Safety Pick list. Starting with the base L trim, every Corolla comes standard with TSS 2.0. This includes advanced safety features such as:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (includes low-light pedestrian detection and daytime cyclist detection)
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Road Edge Detection with Sway Warning System
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

Once again, for the price, the Corolla is in a league all its own, offering semi-autonomous features that would cost double in comparable self-driving cars. Take the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control feature, for example: with DRCC, the Corolla adapts to traffic conditions and even applies emergency brakes before you can say,” Uh-oh.” Heck, a decade ago, TSS would have been unheard of in a car at this price point. Today? It’s all yours for under $20,000.
