Quick: Name Toyota’s bestselling vehicle.
If you said the RAV4, you’d be spot-on correct. Up nearly 6% in sales compared to last year, the 2019 Toyota RAV4 has once again clawed its way up Mount Crossover, beating both the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue to the peak. Completely redesigned and full of the hippest tech in the market, Toyota’s top SUV leaves no question as to why Americans continue to buy the RAV4. It just checks all those checkbox boxes—and then some.
New Generation, New Inside-Out Look
Somewhat returning to its SUV roots, the 2019 RAV4 is less car-crossover and more crossover-crossover, sporting a chunkier exterior style in line with its 4Runner cousin. Ground clearance has increased, as has wheelbase length, and the hexagonal front grille is more aggressive and distinct than RAV4s of generations past. Toyota’s TNGA platform also enhances the RAV4’s structural rigidity by 57% and improves handling. In the back, a spoiler accentuates the new floating roof and angular D-pillar.
The addition of two-tone paint colors helps to freshen up Toyota’s palette, and a high-class Limited trim and outdoorsy Adventure trim fill out the already impressive RAV4 lineup.
“2019 Toyota RAV4 gets the mini-off-roader look right.” – The Car Connection
Inside the new RAV4, functionality is the name of the game. The same angular ergonomics outside move into the cabin, with a two-tiered dashboard and central stack that swoops down into a clever (and ridiculously large) storage compartment. Large volume and tuning knobs are simple to figure out, as well. The available 8.0-inch tablet-like touchscreen sits at the top of that stack, offering compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Plus, the new RAV4 includes Toyota’s latest Entune 3.0 infotainment system, which is lovely.
“We can’t think of many crossovers in this price range that can match the Toyota’s unique combination of funkiness and functionality, let alone its diverse array of interior treatments.” – Car and Driver
Other features include a Wi-Fi hotspot, stylish two-tone SofTex seats to classy up the joint, heated and ventilated seats, a total of 5 USB ports, wireless phone charging, and a JBL premium sound system. In the RAV4 Adventure models, expect some eye-popping accents of bright orange throughout.
All The All-Wheel Drives!
The 2019 RAV4 continues to wield just a singular powertrain—a base 203-horsepower 2.5L engine that makes 184 lb.-ft. of torque—but Toyota has added a third all-wheel-drive system offering. Joining the typical AWD (LE and XLE) and standard electric-motor system (RAV4 Hybrid) is a sophisticated Dynamic Torque Vectoring setup that can disconnect the rear axle at will. It thrives by sending up to 50% of available engine torque to the rear wheels to increase traction when necessary.
This new AWD is optional on the RAV4 Limited and Adventure models. (We highly recommend either of these AWD-equipped RAV4 models if you’re looking for a good winter SUV in St. Louis.)
“Regardless of which setup you choose, the RAV4 rides and steers far better than it ever has.” – Car and Driver
Paired with a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission, the 2.5-liter powertrain has ample scoot-ability; it can break the 60-mph barrier in just 8 seconds, which is no simple task. Better yet, the 2019 RAV4 returns a combined 30 mpg, keeping it on pace with the best fuel-efficient SUVs in America. (The upcoming 2019 RAV4 Hybrid should see numbers in the 40-mpg range.)
Standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0
Thankfully, Toyota has stepped up to the plate by offering standard Safety Sense with all models, the 2019 RAV4 included. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 includes:
- Forward Collision Warning with Pedestrian Detection
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Automatic High Beams
- Lane Tracing Assist
- Road Sign Assist
“Certainly the last-generation RAV4 was a stand-out vehicle for Toyota. But with the 2019 redesign, it’s likely destined for even greater success.” – Consumer Guide
Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking are also optional, as is a premium 360-degree camera with parking sonar sensors. Safety ratings have yet to be released but expect the 2019 Toyota RAV4 to follow in the footsteps of its 2018 sibling by bringing home the IIHS TSP bacon.
